One of the most common traditions and highlights of a wedding reception is the cutting of the wedding cake. The cutting and sharing of the cake by the bride and groom symbolizes unity. The wedding cake is sometimes used as a centerpiece, but "traditionally, wedding cakes were made to bring good luck to all guests and the couple" (Wikipedia). In the past, wedding cakes were considered a sign of one's social status and white icing was a symbol of money, virginity, and purity.
Wedding Cake Traditions and Superstitions
There are numerous traditions and superstitions of wedding cakes. An ancient tradition was to break the cake over the bride's head to ensure good luck and fertility. Another tradition is to freeze the top tier for the couple's first anniversary. Some couples use to choose to have two cakes - one for the bride and one for the groom.
Wedding Cake Decorations and Ideas
Wedding cakes today come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors. Some couples even choose to incorporate wedding cupcakes. They can be decorated in numerous ways including personalized wedding cake toppers, flowers, ribbons, lace, edible photos, pearls, fruit, stencils, edible gems, sequins, and other embellishments.
